I’m currently taking an impromptu speech class in my uni. The teacher loves to incorporate some unorthodox methods of exercising our skill. Last week, she asked us to partner up with a person and we have to stare at each other for 4 minutes straight. No talking, no smiling, no nothing. We also had to sit and be as close as possible until our knees touched. She mentioned about personal space and how people have different sizes of it. I guess my personal space is very large, because I got uncomfortable real quick as soon as my knees touched my friends’.
I also did an extra exercise with my friend after the class. We were standing and staring at each other. To make it more challenging, my friend was slowly inching closer towards me while still maintaining eye contact. I found myself unconsciously stepping back and flinching everytime my friend got too close in my vicinity. That’s when I realize I have a really big personal space, and I hate physical interactions.
